Understanding IS 456 Compliant Repair Mortars for Structural Concrete

IS 456 and Concrete Repair in India

IS 456:2000 (Plain and Reinforced Concrete — Code of Practice) is the governing Indian Standard for structural concrete design and construction. When repairing existing structures, project owners and consultants increasingly specify repair materials that meet IS 456 requirements for strength, durability, and chemical resistance.

What IS 456 Requires for Repair Materials

IS 456 does not specify individual repair products but sets performance benchmarks:

  • Compressive strength: Repair mortar should match or exceed the original concrete grade (M20, M25, M30, etc.)
  • Bond strength: Adequate adhesion to existing concrete — typically ≥1.5 MPa pull-off strength
  • Shrinkage: Low shrinkage to prevent debonding over time
  • Chloride content: Maximum 0.06% chloride by weight of cement (to prevent reinforcement corrosion)
  • Sulphate resistance: Important for structures exposed to soil or industrial effluents

Types of Repair Mortars

Polymer-Modified Cementitious Mortar (PMCM)

The most widely used class for structural repair:

  • Portland cement + fine aggregate + polymer additive (SBR or acrylics)
  • Compressive strength: 30–50 MPa at 28 days
  • Good bond to parent concrete
  • Thicknesses: 5–50mm per layer
  • Suitable for: Spalled columns, beams, slabs, bridge decks

Micro-Concrete / Flowable Repair Mortar

For heavily reinforced sections where hand-compaction is not possible:

  • Free-flow consistency allows placement without vibration
  • Used in formwork repairs, columns, and congested reinforcement areas
  • Compressive strength: 50–80 MPa

Epoxy Mortar

For high-strength, chemical-resistant repairs:

  • Two-component system (resin + hardener + aggregate)
  • Compressive strength: 70–100 MPa
  • Fast cure — traffic-ready in 4–6 hours
  • Used for industrial floors, expansion joints, and localised damage
