Concrete Repair Best Practices: From Assessment to Protection

20 December 20246 min read

Concrete Repair: A Systematic Approach

Concrete structures deteriorate over time due to environmental exposure, chemical attack, and reinforcement corrosion. Proper repair requires a systematic approach that addresses root causes, not just symptoms.

Common Causes of Concrete Deterioration

  1. Reinforcement Corrosion: The most common cause, triggered by chloride ingress or carbonation
  2. Alkali-Silica Reaction (ASR): Internal chemical reaction causing expansion and cracking
  3. Freeze-Thaw Damage: Water expansion in pores during freezing cycles
  4. Chemical Attack: Exposure to acids, sulfates, or industrial chemicals
  5. Structural Overloading: Exceeding design loads causing cracking and spalling

The Repair Process

Step 1: Condition Assessment

  • Visual inspection and documentation
  • Hammer sounding to detect delamination
  • Carbonation depth testing
  • Chloride content analysis
  • Half-cell potential measurement for corrosion mapping

Step 2: Repair Design

Based on the assessment, determine:

  • Repair materials (polymer-modified mortar, micro-concrete, etc.)
  • Reinforcement treatment (anti-corrosion primer)
  • Protective coating system
  • Expected service life of the repair

Step 3: Surface Preparation

  • Remove deteriorated concrete to 20mm behind reinforcement
  • Clean reinforcement to remove all rust
  • Profile concrete surface for bonding
  • Apply bonding bridge or primer

Step 4: Repair Application

  • Apply anti-corrosion primer to exposed reinforcement
  • Build up repair mortar in layers (max 25mm per layer)
  • Cure properly to prevent shrinkage cracking

Step 5: Protective Coating

  • Apply anti-carbonation coating for long-term protection
  • Select coating based on exposure conditions
  • Ensure adequate film thickness

Prevention is Better Than Cure

  • Use quality concrete with adequate cover to reinforcement
  • Apply protective coatings to exposed concrete
  • Implement regular inspection and maintenance programs
  • Address minor defects before they become major repairs
